Church Outreach Ministries

Gassaway United Methodist Church is involved in several outreach ministries to serve our community. Our focus is serving the most vulnerable children, teens and families of all races and ethnicities. It is also our goal in the process to become disciples in showing them God’s love so that they may come to know Christ, a message consistent with the Church’s Mission Statement.

Below is a listing of our current ongoing projects.

Snacks N Pack – Rosemary Potts Chairman – Each week a bag of nonperishable snacks/food is filled for children at Davis Elementary that may be at risk of weekend hunger. These bags are distributed by the school on Friday afternoons. We currently serve 70 children each week via this program during the school year.

Shoebox Ministry – Samaritan’s Purse. Each year in October/November our church participates in the Shoebox Ministry “Operation Christmas Child”. Our church provides between 40-60 shoeboxes filled with toys to be distributed to underprivileged children all over the world.

Halloween Rest Stop – Denver Drake – Chairman. During the Town of Gassaway’s designated Trick or Treat night, the church provides a rest stop for parents and children to use facilities, to warm up or to cool down and to get candy and free hot/cold drinks. This provides an opportunity for many to come inside our church and receive warm hospitality creating a positive church experience of Christ’s love that may influence them in the future.

Feed The Lambs – Denver Drake – Chairman. The focus, in coordination with the local DHHR, is to assure children receive gifts at Christmas and that families and seniors have access to food during the holiday season. Additionally we are a resource throughout the year when folks fall on hard times, such as payment of utility bills, food assistance and travelers who have unexpected expenses. Another way to share the love of Christ and hopefully make a difference.

C.A.N.E. Children Abused Neglected and Endangered. Nancy Workman – Chairman with Mary Martha Circle and GUMC Congregation. In coordination with the local DHHR, donate personal supplies needed for children that are removed from their home at any time of the day that have little to no belongings. Things like deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. Our group has also made many fleece blankets to be given to each child as a means of comfort and something they can keep. Just another way to reach out and help children and show the love of Christ.
